2. Why do I need a private in-home charger?

Most charging is done at home. Save time and money charging at home. Have peace of mind knowing that your EV is fully charged before heading out the door. You may also benefit from tax credits. Check with your local and federal tax guidelines.

3. How long does it take to charge up my car at home? How long does it take to charge up my car at a commercial EV Charging Station?

This depends on the size of the battery and the speed of the charger/charging station. A typical electric car (60kWh battery) takes just under 8 hours to charge from empty-to-full with a 7kW home wallbox. The bigger your car’s battery and the slower the charging point, the longer it takes to charge from empty to full. Level 2 chargers are common public chargers at 240 volts and give you between 15 and 40 miles per hour. You can refer to one of our recent blog posts EV Charging Times. Another useful tool is Blink's EV Charging Time Calculator, if your vehicle is fully charged, what is the actual range or distance it will get you.

4. How much does home charging options cost?

To figure out your cost of charging at home, multiply your vehicle's kWh/100 miles figure by the electric rate for the time of day you'll most often be charging. That figure will tell you the cost per 100 miles.

You also can work from the total kilowatt-hours it takes to recharge the EV's battery. If an EV requires 40 kWh to recharge a fully depleted battery, and the rate is 18 cents per kWh, that's $7.20 for a fill-up.

The average cost for a gallon of regular gasoline in the US over the past two years was $2.35/gallon. Using 15,000 miles as the average amount of miles a person will drive in a year, the annual cost of gasoline for the average car will be about $1,400 per year. The average person driving the average EV 15,000 miles per year pays about $540 per year, or $45 per month, to charge it.
